In chapter 2 "Your Trusted Friends" Schlosser shows us in this chapter the advantages that these businesses had endorsed. Schlosser examines and describes the manipulative skills used by these organizations to target certain groups of certain ages. These strategies would help flourish businesses sooner than expected. Ray Kroc and Walt Disney are examples of owners who were influential in persuading their customers to return ! Eric explains that Disney's company was recognized globally a while before McDonald's became the most popular company in the world. Eric however states that Kroc was more influential than Walt. Ronald McDonald, McDonald's mascot proved the influences of Kroc and went on to become more recognized than any other fictional character including Mickey Mouse. Eric also refers to the people who tried to start a fast food business rather than the film making business. Eric Schlosser examines and discusses the certain types of strategies that were used by these big organizations. Advertisements that targeted kids was the perfect initiation to prosper in the food industry. The growth in children's advertisements has been driven by efforts to increase not just current, but also future consumption.

In Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser , Schlosser introduces many fast food industry pioneers and where there are now . There are 2 sides in the fast food industry , either you become successful or you don't. Carl N. Karcher is an example of a successful industry and how it failed . Chapter 1 entitled "The Founding Fathers" reveals a few important pioneers of the fast food industry . Eric claims on how automobiles changed how Los Angeles entirely . In 1940 , 1 million cars were produced and used in Los Angeles , more than 40 states combined . With cars being produced , consumers would no longer need to get out of their cars due to drive-thru's being created in every business. Eric explains the effective strategies that the Mcdonald brothers , one known as the Speedee Service System . This would revolutionize the way we ate a business restaurants. The fast food process was more efficient and the food was affordable . Many small food businesses wouldn't be able to compete with such low costs and efficiency . There wasn't any need for waiters anymore since most things had machines that made food .All fast food industries were now competing to be the fastest and cheapest . All through Southern California fast food businesses were striving more than ever , opening businesses one after another trying to keep up with their competitors . Eric Schlosser tells us how companies spend millions trying to convince customers to go to their restaurant rather than their competition.

Food is the most essential thing in my life. Without food i don't think i would be doing anything productive or even for that matter, being alive. Food is important to the human body as it provides the necessary nutrients for energy used in daily activities. Every person has and needs food in order to survive , but we don't all eat the same . The food we usually eat also depends on our cultural backgrounds. My eating routine consists of 3 meals per day . The best meal would be breakfast because breakfast is the first source of food you consume giving me the enough vitamins and energy to start off my day . Lunch would be like a recharge to my brain mainly because lunch is what keeps me going until diner . Diner would be the last course meal of the day . At diner , its nothing to special , something light to wake up hungry for the morning . The best cook i have met is my mother . My mother is who decides what we would be eating on that particular day .
Like any other family , i have cultural associations with the food i eat . Particularly on weekdays is when i devour my food like there's no tomorrow. My mother is the only lady who cooks for the whole family . I cook , but my cooking skills aren't as great as my mom's . I very much enjoy those days when my mother has prepared me 2 of my favorite spanish dishes . One of the dishes is named '"lomo saltado" which is made up of a mixture of rice , french fries and meat . Another dish my mother prepares is called "halea" which is made up of fried seafood . I usually help my mother with the picking of food . It's like going clothes shopping but instead your shopping for food !! On weekends i usually don't eat home-made food since my mother isn't around , so i stick to fast food restaurants or i even go enjoy some mexican food .
I've experienced many jobs in the food industry and let me tell you , its not as amusing as it seems . The food industry has any policies and restrictions when it comes to the safety of food . Even the pay isn't as much as you think it is . I had a job as a cashier in a bakery/restaurant . My job was to make sure the buisness was clean and sanitary . It wasn't an easy job even though the food tasted delicious. I told myself , this isn't something i want to be doing for the rest of my life . One day i just decided to quit . This job wasn't worth it at all . Food is the most basic and important substance that is needed in order to survive and provide your body with the sufficient energy to keep moving forward. I don't think you would be reading this if it wasn't for food . None of us would even exist ! I dont discriminate when it comes to food as long as it doesn't have too much onions .

The Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A) helps ensure that America's food supplies are safe from contamination . The Food and Drug Administration plays a significant role in protecting food from viral , bacterial and chemical contamination all throughout the nation . The F.D.A. is always working on methods to learn how contamination occurs and how it can be prevented . The F.D.A. has 625 investigators working in 20 different offices across the country who are constantly inspecting if our food supply and food companies are keeping our food safe . Just imagine if the Food and Drug Administration never existed !
The Food and Drug Administration not only helps with food safety , but it also educates consumers to ensure that the food they eat is safe . The F.D.A educates consumers when it comes to cooking food on appropriate temperatures , keeping it refrigerated and how raw meat , seafood and poultry should be handled . The F.D.A. does not only working alone . It works closely with federal , state , and local agencies , private companies , and consumers to make the food even safer. The F.D.A. even works on the borders of our nation to ensure that any imported food is safe from any hazardous contamination .
Its significant to know that the Food and Drug Administration does everything possible to prevent food contamination but even so , contaminated food is still found within the borders of our country . Just look at the incidents in many fast food restaurants for example , such as the incident in New Jersey in 1974 where salmonella was found in unpasteurized apple cider causing at least 200 illnesses. Even in 2010 , 500 millions eggs had to be recalled after dangerous levels of salmonella were detected in the eggs of two Iowa producers , Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farm . Nearly 2,000 illnesses were reported within 14 states. Its may not be that the Food and Drug Administration aren't fully enforcing these policies or it can be that there should be more strict policies that should be enforced .
As a consumer , i am extremely concerned about the things i am eating and if there are killing me inside rather than supplying me with energy . The Food and Drug Administration cant be all over the nation picking at every food at the same time , even for them its impossible . It is our right and duty as consumers to ensure that what we are eating is not killing us . As consumers we should put in our part to help prevent food contamination.
